Street food of Madurai

Madurai, one of the oldest Indian cities, dates back to the pre-Christian era; a land of festivities and exotic cuisine. Madurai caters to the food junkie and the pious traveler alike. There is no better way to enjoy this throbbing ancient city than to trek along the streets infested with roadside eateries which open up in the evenings. Interestingly, Madurai is referred to as ‘thoonka nagaram’ which means that the city does not sleep ever and many eateries stay open here well into the night.

This great temple town though quite unassuming is truly cosmopolitan when it comes to the culinary options. Madurai’s extensive trade links with the Romans, Greek, French, Arabs, Singapore, Malaysia, and Srilanka have largely influenced her flavour and recipes.

The Chettinad influence can be tasted here, in the meat dishes (chicken, mutton, rabbit, and crab) and rice based snacks like idiyappam and panniyaaram. There is tasty spicy mutton biriyani available here which is a Muslim contribution and the rice has a unique flavour, making it equally appealing as the tender cooked mutton in the dish. Kothu parotta which is a Srilankan dish, fried snacks, Halwa and other sweet variations dribbling with ghee are also available in the region. The favourite of many in the evenings is the plethora of dosas on offer. Talk about being spoiled with choices! The dosas come in many flavors, sizes and shapes. Rocket dosa, family dosa and Madurai
